Troncones is a sleepy little surf town that embodies the best of what there is to love about Mexico. Don’t expect pushy vendors or fast-paced monster resorts like their neighbor to the south, Ixtapa. Even though the big city is only 20 minutes away, the vibes couldn’t be more different. The local vendors are welcoming and family friendly. The villas and rentals are quaint and usually include an on site caretaker that will service the grounds, and take care of anything you may need to make your stay more enjoyable (and they may even cook for you- upon request!). In Troncones, there is NO WHERE TO GO….. And FAST!

Troncones is a 40 minute drive north of the Zihuatanejo international airport. Renting a car and driving is the easiest option, but hiring a taxi to take you is an option as well! You can easily catch a cab outside of the airport (knowing Spanish is definitely a plus when bartering with Taxi drivers!). As of now, there is not a shuttle bus that takes you directly IN to Troncones. But, there is a bus from the airport to the main Playa Troncones entrance, off of Rt 200. But, it would be a 5km walk on a very narrow road to bring you in to Troncones. Rt 200 is a well maintained, 2 lane coastal highway, and we drove it often to and from Zihuatanejo during our one month stay in Troncones.

Like I mentioned earlier, do not expect any “Resorts” or big hotels in Troncones. This is a much more intimate environment. There are many accommodation options ranging from “surf rooms” to gorgeous Casas right on the beach. I will outline my favorites in varying price ranges…

Puesta Del Sol is a relaxed beachfront inn with 3 accommodation options… 2 Mini suites (one oceanfront and one with a mountain view) that can sleep 3 people each. They have private kitchens and baths (and can be combined to accommodate up to 6). A surfer room has 2 twin beds, and although small, has a private bath and an ocean view patio to chill after a morning surf sesh! With a price tag under $100/ night, you’d be hard pressed to find a better value. Listening to the ocean waves , alone, is PRICELESS!

Don’t let the name “hostel” scare you! This property isn’t just for the transient surfer passing through! They have dorm rooms from $19/ night to full, private family accommodations that sleep 4. They even rent out “luxury tents” on their property if you’re looking for a true BEACH BUM adventure! The best part about staying in a hostel, is the diverse group of people, both local and tourist alike, you get to interact with! It’s an experience you won’t soon forget!

Among my very top #1 choice in Troncones would be, CASA VIVA! This is TRULY the perfect balance of privacy and immersing yourself in the culture of this beautiful area. The accommodations range from air-conditioned private casitas that offer a peaceful retreat from the mid day sun, to an open-air sleeping porch that can be set up with 8 single or 2 king beds. A gorgeous common area, with outdoor kitchen, is shared with all the property’s guests. But trust, anyone you meet in this intimate environment will become lifelong friends, and perhaps future travel buddies! If total and complete inclusion are your vaca goals, you can rent the entire property! A caretaker and housekeeper are at your disposal, and for an extra fee they provide a delicious breakfast and/or lunch! You can even request a beach fire and/or a homemade pizza grilled in their pizza oven on property! Warning: after a week spent here, you’ll be wondering why you ever went ANYWHERE else on earth for your family vacations!

If you are looking to be pampered with some nice amenities, this luxury boutique property is an excellent choice. Accommodations range from 2 story bungalows that sleep the entire family, to private mini villas and/ or suites that sleep 2. There is also an opportunity to rent the entire property which accommodates 22 people in entitreity. Amenities include A/C options, housekeeping services, a sparkling ocean view pool, private patch of beachfront with beach chairs provided, kitchens ensuite, optional cook and/ or shopping services, and airport transportation! With a price tag of $700/ week for a family bungalow you’d be hard-pressed to find a better value for a beachfront vacation in paradise!

Don’t think that just because this is a SLEEPY beach town you’ll be relaxing ALL the time. There are tons of fun adventurous activities that will keep you busy!

The “Big Show”

So, yes. It’s a THING. Every evening, right before sunset, the whole town seems to pause, congregate on the sand, and marvel in nature’s magic. No two sunsets are ever the same.
